Trenzas Amigas: Braiding Hair to Fund Immigrant Families
Trenzas Amigas @trenzas.amigas is a mutual aid initiative started by Latinas in Orange County in response to the increase and brutality of raids against the immigrant community.
I’m so grateful I got to speak with one of the cofounders, Krystal who shared more about their work.

After protesting and organizing in other ways, the founders wanted to do more so they went directly to the streets. So inspired by their roots, they braid hair to raise money for vendor buy outs and other initiatives on the weekends on top of their regular jobs and responsibilities.
Through social media, word spread about their pop up events, and in the last eight months, they’ve hosted more than 30 events and raised thousands in direct financial relief for immigrant vendors and families.

I attended a recent pop up in Boyle Heights at @espacio1839 and it was inspiring to see hundreds arrive to support this cause. Each guest had their hair brushed, slicked back, and styled with different ribbons of their choosing. Volunteer stylist took their time adding gems by hand- because Latinas always know how to make each other sparkle.
Girlhood. Community. Care. ❤️
